About Plum Bush Farm Goats and Soaps

Welcome to our little corner of the farm! We thought we’d take a few minutes to share a little about what we do, the goats, and why we use two very special ingredients in our handmade soap: fresh goat milk and beef tallow.

A Little About Our Goats

Our farm is home to ADGA registered Nigerian Dwarf goats. They’re a smaller dairy breed with plenty of personality, and we enjoy having them as part of our farm. While they may be small, they produce a surprisingly rich milk with a naturally high butterfat content. Our dairy girls are enrolled in the American Dairy Goat Association’s performance programs.

Yes, the goat milk in our soap actually comes from our very own goats that we milk right here on the farm. Pictured below are a few of the girls. Each have their own unique personality and place here in our herd.

Why Goat Milk in Soap?

Goat milk has been used in traditional soapmaking for a long time, and for good reason. It’s naturally rich in fats and contains vitamins, minerals, and milk sugars.

When used in soap, goat milk helps create a creamy lather and gives the finished bar a nice, smooth feel. Its natural milk fats also contribute to the conditioning qualities of the soap.

We don’t just add a splash of milk, either. Each bar of our soap contains a full ounce of goat milk! We use milk from our own goats, making it a special part of what we create here on the farm.

Why We Use Tallow

Tallow is another ingredient with a long history in traditional soapmaking. Before all the specialty oils and modern soap ingredients became popular, tallow was a common staple in homemade soap.

And there’s a good reason it has stood the test of time.

Tallow has a fatty acid profile that makes it especially well suited for soap. It helps produce a firm, long-lasting bar that doesn’t disappear after just a handful of uses. It also contributes to a creamy, stable lather and gives soap a nice conditioning feel.

We use 30% tallow in our soap recipes, making it a significant part of what gives our bars their character. We love using traditional ingredients that have been valued in soapmaking for generations.

We like to think of our soap as good old-fashioned clean, made with time-tested ingredients and a little extra thought put into the details. Each bar offers the simple goodness of traditional soapmaking, with the added bonus of additional, thoughtfully chosen oils and fragrance.

Olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil, shea butter and castor oil are the addtional oils in our soap. All of our fragrances are cruelty free and pthalate free.

The Dream

Here at our farm, soapmaking is just one more way to get to enjoy the things our little farm provides. Our goats give us wonderful milk, and using it to create something useful and enjoyable is a natural extension of what we do here. We’re not a big operation, just a small farm with a love for traditional ingredients, a little hands-on work, and products made with purpose.

When you choose one of our bars, you’re getting more than just a bar of soap.

You’re getting a little piece of our farm, made with milk from our own goats and ingredients we’ve thoughtfully chosen.

We’re glad to share what we make, and grateful for everyone who chooses to support small farms and handmade products.

From our farm to your home.
