About Us

Hi, we are Gabriel and Jenny Burkey. Our farm is located near Beaver Crossing, NE, right next to the old Oregon Trail. We have five children, and enjoy learning with them about God’s creation through the animals, garden, and orchard that we maintain on our few acres.

The main purpose of this website is to blog about our registered Nigerian Dwarf Goats. In addition to the goats, we occasionally raise puppies from our Australian Cattle Dogs (more commonly known as red or blue heelers). We’ll also blog about life on our little farm, as well as the orchard and vineyard that we maintain for our own enjoyment.

We’re not experts in everything garden, orchard, or animal related, but we do our best to learn all we can about the animals, plants, trees, and vines that we have, and be responsible stewards of the blessings God has given us.

Why Plum Bush Farm?

When you raise and register goats with the American Dairy Goat Association, or ADGA, you should have a farm name. Here’s why: When kids you raise get registered, the first part of their name will be the name of the farm to which the kids’ mother was registered. Example: If Annabel has a kid and that kid gets registered under the name “Blossom”, the kids’ official name would be “Plum Bush Blossom”, since she came from our farm. (“Farm” is not part of the official name.)

Since the farm name is (hopefully) going to show up on a lot of ADGA registration papers, you can see why it makes sense to put some thought into selecting a farm name.

We searched available names, did a lot of thinking, tried a lot of names on for size, and eventually decided on Plum Bush Farm.

Plum bushes are abundant in our part of the world, and are scattered around the border of our property. They are one of the first harbingers of Spring in the area, and our children have often played house under their white fragrant blossoms. In a good fruit year, we have already picked baskets and buckets of the tart little fruit to steam for jelly.
